It is possible but not going to be easy at all! The LED array are all very tiny and sealed inside a plastic case. If you replace them, you would need very small surface mounted LED and pack them real small or get a custom made LED bar array in your desired color.

I wouldn’t try to custom build the LED array but rather look around and see if anyone makes an LED array bar that is 224 LED tall and measures about 1/2 inch total. Even the smallest single SMD LED couldn’t be packed into 1×224 array for less than half inch.

I don’t know about yellow, wouldn’t they be very bright compared to red? Blue maybe if you put in some resistor to cut down the current and its brightness.

Bottom line: if you got the time, money, and motivation, by all means knock yourself out! Do post pictures if you succeed! But IMO it’s not worth the trouble at this time.

It’s all working and good but I still haven’t figured out how to take the bottom plate off. Since the whole underside was covered with foam sheet I didn’t want to tear it. i ended up having to clean the whole bottom the hard way.

My scanner on the other hand decided to make loud rattling noise and not scan anything. 🙁 Time for a new scanner.

Heh I wish I could offer my time for testing but I don’t have any experience or means of programming chips. I do have a few TV’s to test it out including a standard 4:3 TV and widescreen TV to see if anything goes wrong.

AFAIK only 4 games are not available for Flash cart. They have been dumped but not released. Which sucks because not everyone would want to pay around $500 for Virtual Space Invader collection or other extremely rare Japanese releases.

Looks very good! Should this take off and costs reasonable it may spur interest in VB collecting from people who have shunned VB because it causes too much headaches. Plus no need to worry about broken LED display 🙂

Any idea what the target price may be? Also could it be made to output in separate red and blue for 3D mode?

Also not mine ™:

All USA games except for Jack Bros + some manuals + hard case + many stuff, $325 for it.

Almost a quick way to start a collection

http://cgi.ebay.com/Waterworld-Nintendo-Virtual-Boy-Complete-Factory-Seal_W0QQitemZ130164552725

complete Waterworld, BIN $74.95 or start bidding at 1 cent, probably one of the 2 rarest USA VB games.

Not mine BTW

Impossible to destroy anything on web sites. People could have downloaded and archived them and even host them on their own web sites. The real issue is trying to avoid Nintendo’s totalitarian copyright police.

I wanted one when they first came out and I tried the store demo but they were expensive. Then in late 96 my local store had the entire stock on clearance sale. VB unit new for only 30 dollars. In the few months, I was able to get all 14 games new mostly from Toys R us when they marked the games as low as $3 each plus the AC tap and a 3rd party carry case. I figure I spent less than $100 on the set.

I still own the set. 🙂

Sadly it’s a common problem with the Virtual Boy. The flex cable that is connected to the LED array is held on by glue and the glue can fail either from time, excess heat, or from physical abuse (ie dropping) The fix is easy if you have the right tool though.

First time poster here but put me down for one Flash Boy 🙂 I came from AA forum (I see a few familiar faces here!) I also posted a link to someone’s eBay auction that had 46 Virtual Baseball games a few days ago so dunno who really got it but it would mean 46 cart connector and shells to make more FBs The auction has ended: 280161819686 and the final price plus shipping would put the price of Baseball at $1.65 each, very cheap even for a VB game.

Right now I’m trying to put my store display back together and get it cleaned. if the USB cable for flash cart fits inside and I can find a cheap USB device or cheap laptop with USB I could change game and leave it as display. My display is the counter version like: http://www.vr32.de/modules/hardware/index.php?type=displays&model=dphase&sub=counter_version
