It’s interesting to note that on the Virtual Boy Software Schedule on page 98 of The Super Famicom Magazine, Issue 7.21 No. 13 1995, the title “Virtual Handball” can be seen. Thus, it appears that in between Hect applying the working title “Virtual Dodgeball” (ヴァーチャルドッジボール) and the title “Virtual Battle Ball” (ヴァーチャルバトルボール) to their game, they also applied the working title “Virtual Handball” (ヴァーチャル・ハンドボール).
Also to be noted is that the genre for the unreleased game “Intercept” is shown to be “Sports,” which is actually also what the Perfect “Stereoscopic Panorama” Book shows it to be. Perhaps Coconuts Japan was planning to make it a futuristic and/or space-based sports game, like what they did with Space Squash.

The Virtual Boy comes equipped with a 32-bit RISC chip, and its game screen is displayed using two sets of high-quality mirror-scanning LED displays on the left and right. At first glance, the left and right screens look the same, but the positions of the luminescent images deviate slightly, and when you look at the left screen with your left eye and the right screen with your right eye at the same time, a parallax occurs, and it really looks like there are three-dimensional images. The screenshots introduced this time are what we could see with either eye, so these are fairly impaired compared to the actual stereoscopic images. We recommend checking it out with your own eyes at a retail store.

To supply power, you can put 6 AA batteries in the battery box (these allow about 7 hours of use), or if you buy an AC adapter tap sold separately, you can also play using an AC adapter. Other peripheral devices to be released include a shoulder mount, which fixes to your body at your shoulders and lets you play with a free posture.

Software that produces stereoscopic presentations… that’s the first point. Software whose playing time doesn’t last for a long time (after a certain amount of time passes from the start of a game, a screen appears, prompting a break). Many manufacturers seem to think that one play will end after about 15 to 20 minutes. Considering all this, the genres and types of software that will come out will likely be limited. Action games, sports games, puzzlers, shooters, and so on will be suitable, but it’ll be difficult to make RPGs or simulations.

Having said this, genres and so on may not matter, depending on how the software is made. In general, in order for new hardware to become explosively popular, it is necessary for the explosion-triggering software to take full advantage of the special characteristics of its hardware – like “Tetris” at the time of the Game Boy. There is now the possibility that software will emerge from that which couldn’t even be thought of in the past, namely because of the types of hardware that have existed until now.

A Google image search doesn’t bring up very many results. It looks like Unseen64.net has had a lower quality image of it up for about ten years, and there are a couple other sites with a similar image:
In any case, Planet Virtual Boy very likely has the highest quality image of it on the net now. 😀

Congrats to whomever pushed the Buy-It-Now button for this one:
As I was browsing through my Nintendo Power issues recently, I noticed something in Issue # 80 from January of 1996 that might give us a good idea of the rarity of this Nintendo Co., Ltd. 1995 Annual Report Booklet and the relevant press releases that were included with it. On pages 112 and 113 of the issue, it can be seen that only 5 winners of that particular Player’s Poll Contest were awarded press kits containing this report. Other than that, only industry insiders who were allowed into the expo would have received copies, unless other privileged attendees held similar contests as Nintendo Power did.

– Rom needs Japanese text replaced.
These three games won’t need any work done on the ROMs, as virtually all the text in the games is in English already, and whenever there is Japanese text, there is corresponding English text on the same screen.

New reply from Eighting:”
Mr. Fredric BlaholtzAs a premise, we can not answer whether “Invincible Iron Man Gagaga – In” existed or not.
Because we have a duty of confidentiality as a developer.
Therefore, we can not even answer who the client of the game is.For your reference, the company Hudson has disbanded, and it is unknown who owns the rights of that work.

If I had to make a bet, I’d bet that nobody who is currently at Eighting even knows anything about the game, let alone who the client may have been. I’m guessing that the only traces of the game lie with person who currently possesses such. Thus, there would also be nobody at Eighting who would even care if such ever got leaked; nevertheless, rules have to be followed, unfortunately…
e5frog wrote:
It doesn’t say anything on the papers presented in the first post? I’m thinking if there’s a business name other than Eighting.
In Post # 4, I translated everything that can be seen on the papers in the first post, so no business name appears there.
Unfortunately, there could be a lot of more interesting and useful information among the other pages of that bundle of papers, but the woman in possession of such has already indicated that she won’t reveal more info among those papers.
If it’s a Cyberbots-styled game instead of what i said then we really lost a potentially good game for the system. I mean, there’s destruction galore on that game…But knowing that these were the same people from Bloody Roar then i wouldn’t be surprised 😉
Now that you mention it, Gagaga-In very well may have been an attempt to be a close spin-off of Cyberbots. The sketch of the giant robot in Gagaga-In even includes the drill arm, like what the one Cyberbot has.
KGRAMR wrote:
I bet it’s something akin to Teleroboxer, which would’ve been awesome.
It’s weird, though, that Eighting doesn’t seem to have made anything like Teleroboxer later on for any other system. It would be a shame if they had an idea for Gagaga-In that just got totally scrapped and then never found itself in any other form on another system. That’s why I think it could have been a one-on-one fighting game similar to Bloody Roar.
Although, given that it seems the concept was initially created long before the Virtual Boy’s launch, since the sketch seems to indicate that it was thought that the game, at one point, could have possibly been released in July of 1995 around the same time as the Virtual Boy, if it was indeed going to be like Teleroboxer, then maybe that’s why it got put on the back-burner, since they would have likely heard about Teleroboxer and then perhaps decided not to make something too similar to it.
Nevertheless, the fact that it was going to be “giant” robots is rather interesting. One would think that they would have wanted there to be interaction with other large obstacles or objects during the fights, such as with the destruction of buildings, etc. Otherwise, what point would there have been for the robots to be giant?
KR155E wrote:
It seems we’re out of luck for now, at least as long as Eighting still exists. Because of the possibility of a lawsuit against her, she is not willing to get the ROM dumped, share a video, or even more images from the design document. The fact that the game was never publicly announced doesn’t make it any easier to share anything. Her getting into legal problems doesn’t seem too far fetched, judging by how quickly her video was taken down in 2013…At least I got to see photos of the cartridge, which I am allowed to share.
At the very least, I would like to know how the game would have played. Would it have been a one-on-one fighting game, where you see your character from the side and fight one-on-one battles similar to Ultraman’s, or would it have been a full 3D game where you look out of the eyes of your giant robot, and could you have moved around fully or would you have been stationary like with Teleroboxer? Have you tried asking her for details like that?
If I had to guess, I guess I’d go with a 3D one-on-one fighting game with play mechanics like Virtua Fighter and the use of polygons or the like, since Bloody Roar was released not too long after this one should have been, so perhaps ideas from this unreleased game made it into Bloody Roar.
KR155E wrote:
I have briefly talked to her this morning. The video she posted was taken down by request of “stakeholders of the developer” and it’s difficult to share information about the game since Eighting does still exist and might go after her. She’s a former Hudson employee and has a development ROM in possession. It’s unclear whether it’s a dump or an actual cartridge, but I strongly assume it’s the latter. Unfortunately, she currently does not have a Virtual Boy, so she can’t shoot a new video.
I did not get another reply after asking if there was a possibility to share the ROM… Will wait for another day, but might have to play the “obscene amounts of money” card. 😉
That is super exciting! I can help out with playing that card, if need be. 🙂
I find it incredible that the original poster of the info about this game seems to have been in the presence of a test cart for the game. We haven’t been able to find evidence of people who’ve come across test carts for the vast majority of other unreleased Virtual Boy games, for which much more information has existed in magazines and the like and been made more readily available online for quite some time. Nevertheless, it does seem based on the info that the poster must have been in contact with someone from Hudson or Eighting, who allowed the poster to try out the test cart on an actual Virtual Boy, but then the cart likely went back into the possession of Hudson or Eighting. Either way, I’d love to see that video footage of the sample game or demo.

I myself don’t speak Japanese, so someone who does would have to try to communicate with this person, if the person can be reached. I took my best crack at translating the info, but it gave me more difficulty than Japanese texts that I’m used to looking at, so it would be good if someone fluent in Japanese could check my results:

From the small viewing window of an actual machine and using a smartphone, I recorded the sample ROM of the 80’s robot fighting game “Invincible Iron Man Gagaga-In,” which Hudson and the planning and development group Eighting were developing, which was to be released after about a year had passed from the launch of the Virtual Boy. It’s very responsive with well-developed techniques and is a lot of fun. It is just a sample that has now been shelved and that saw its end during the lifespan of development for the Virtual Boy, so the music is from Panic Bomberman. I think that it could have become popular software among Virtual Boy titles if it had been released.
