no, actually all yet surfaced protos are japanese version.

well, i just remember that there were us insmouse prototypes from acclaim, but i never heard about those again.

you’re right, since japanese and us versions are very different, the proto will be something new even if it is the final version. the patches are for the us version only.

parasyte does not have a proto, but he found out that only few bytes or a single byte changed can unlock the debug menu on several vb games.

nope, this is the first one to appear. only other protos are virtual bowling, faceball, bound high and space pinball.

the closest to panic bomber proto goodness is two patches by parasyte to enable debug menus on retail roms (http://www.vr32.de/modules/games/index.php?type=released&sec=downloads&id=9). as you can see on the first screenshot, the date of the build is displayed under the debug menu. since this proto probably has debug menus too, the date will tell you if it’s a proto of the final build.

wow! congrats on finding that one! i’m looking forward to seeing more of it! 🙂 what exacly do the stickers on the eproms say?

found the problem, but in kernel/module.php, line 389.

if (preg_match(“/[^\?]*index\.php$/i”, $_SERVER[‘REQUEST_URI’]) && $xoopsConfig[‘startpage’] == $this->getVar(‘dirname’))

the preg_match makes the right hand column disappear when any get variable is attached to the address.
only removing the preg_match or the [^\?] from it would not work, because i don’t want the side bar show when reading articles for example, but only on the start page.
so now i only have to fully understand that logic to allow the ?lang variable. 😉 does anyone have a link or keyword to search for?

EDIT: finally fixed this. 🙂

Only thing is I’d like to get a Flashboy before I sell them all. Anyone know when the next batch is going to be available?

hopefully next week. but if you did not yet preorder, better do it right now, we already have more than 50 preorders. you could be lucky when someone backs out.

i replaced the above file with a qucikly updated demo version which has a menu to choose the display mode. maybe someone can add a working one. ;P

i will build yours asap. your avatar makes me drool. ;D

how did you get 16 colors that way? i mean red1+red2 = red2+red1. or did you show one image a bit longer than the other one?

hm. it was showing up under the wrong news posting, the one after the correct one. i fixed it but have no idea what caused this. 🙁

works for me. no problems at all. which comments were unreadable for you? which browser are you using?

There must be a problem with the compiler because I’m still getting errors. That’s really annoying. I wonder what’s going wrong… Oh well, I’ll just keep being a VB fan, even if I can’t write software for it (yet.)

before giving up, better give an older version a try, like the second gccvb release. it is much easier to set up.

the dennis hopper scene is by far the best of it. xD

yes, it uses intel chips, check this photo:

there might be improvements in the future, but at the moment we are busy building flashboys for those who preordered. when we got enough, i can very well imgine richard looking into adding more features. 🙂

bad news for some of you, there will be only 30 instead of 50 flashboys in the third batch, because many of the chips were bad.

the others who preordered will have to wait a bit more, sorry!

Yes, the Virtual Boy, the only cartridge based game console that it’s ROMs were completely worthless for until now, has it’s own flashcart finally. I figured I’d post this thread for two reasons: to create awareness, and to make my $150 or so expense help you decide without spending the money.

The box:

The cart:

Apparently this product has been created by some dude named Richard Hutchinson who has created some cool video game hardware in the past.

I bought the FlashBoy because I have a Virtual Boy and love it dearly. Mario’s Tennis originated there, and there’s some great Nintendo-released games you’ll never be able to play if you don’t own the system (such as the best side scrolling version of Wario Land and a quazi-Punch-Out!! sequel called Teleroboxer). One of the huge downsides to the Virtual Boy’s failure is that many games for the system sell for over $200+ on ebay due to their rarity, plus some other good ones like Jack Bros. going for over $50. I felt the price of this flashcart was justified in that sense.

The first major downside: No saves. The guy making these is not a modchip manufacturer or anything. He makes them by hand and it takes him hours to make one. Adding a save feature would be extremely expensive. The good side to that however is no expensive games really make use of any saving. Wario Land is the only game where saving is a must-have, and that game can be had for under $8.

Another downside: One ROM at a time. The ROM has to be “padded” to the maximum size allowed by the VirtualBoy for it to properly run. Since the VirtualBoy is hardly a portable console, this isn’t such a big deal. When you are done playing a game, just plug the device into the PC, erase the game and load another.

Everything else is pretty much what you’d expect. It plays every ROM I’ve tried (over 20) and it plays them flawlessly. It comes with the flashcart, a USB cable, and a CD filled with homebrew and programs to flash and pad the ROMs. I received it very fast, despite being on a waiting list and having it come from overseas.

Is it worth the price? It’s hard to say as I am a Virtual Boy fan (I even permanently fixed the “glitched display” problems that eventually plague all the systems on the side for a while). If you were even once tempted to buy some rare games for the console on ebay, it’s probably for you. Then again, anyone playing a Virtual Boy in 2008 must have some sort of insane love for the system.

It can be purchased here: http://www.vr32.de/modules/newbb/viewforum.php?forum=7 (again, there’s a waiting list) and just wanted to post my review since ~$150 for the thing is a lot of money. Figured I’d be the guinea pig.

so, both items go to iko-da from v-b.net for 1.561 and 334 euro.

it’s a good deal for you imho!
