I would have never guessed that one exists. I wish I had one so that I could build a multi player game.
Nice to this release finally happening. My next game will be longer. I promise.
The manual is full of insider jokes. So make sure to check it out.
Good video. Kiosk is looking great.
I’m working on a project for quite some time now but always felt like it is not far enough to be talked about. It is one of these projects that look easy when you start but then grow in complexity. I used to only work on it once in a while. However, with a deadline next year I can plan ahead easier. I will give my best to make this a worthy tribute.

too bad all this stuff is above my head i lost touch with coding after q-basic in 7th grade… i really liked it but just don’t have the patience anymore to learn a new code.
The whole point of the tool is to reduce the programming effort. Right now you can make things moving, jumping, flickering, animated and “beam” then in/out without writing a single line of code. All of the user interaction and enemy AI in the MarioCombat demo is coded though. It is still c and it is rather easy to do because I tried to make the interaction with my engine simple.

Hi there! This looks really great and promising! However, would you guys know why it doesn’t work when I’m clicking on the attached file to download it? I tried on two different computers and it either gives me some error message, or it downloads but the file has no size at all.
Actually, the link is dead for me as well. Why did no one tell me? I attached the 7z zipped as a zip. Maybe that will work. So first extract the .zip file, then extract the .7z .
[Edit] Seems like the link is dead as well. Krisse? A little help maybe?

I wouldn’t try to make this too complicated. I liked the idea in the other thread because it was like: Submit something as a tribute to the system. So I wouldn’t go for categories and tons of prices. Just let everyone submit whatever and how much they want. No submission should be too bad. Have a voting afterwards. The winner gets a trophy.
So if someone decides to doodle a really cool VB image in 5 minutes and everyone likes it he will win over the guy the guy who spend a year on programming a game. But it doesn’t matter because there is no big pot of gold at the first place. Just the glory.
That way we might end up with tons of cool stuff like comics, doodles, paintings, music, videos, reviews, demos, games, tools, hardware and so on. All dedicated to the 20th birthday of the VB.

Not sure if that would involve a VB-related project contest, VB-inspired artwork submissions, or any other fitting tribute I suppose.
That’s a great idea. A general tribute contest.
As I got many requests for this one lately I decided to release it in it’s current state. Please be aware that this is a pre-alpha version that has not been touched after the coding competition. Many features are missing, the UI is misbehaving sometimes (and inconsistent) and it still crashes from time to time (mainly related to images not being accessible).
As VirtualBox is integrated into vbde the release consist of a slightly modified version of vbde which has virtualBox inside.
It includes MarioCombat with all of its resources (images, virtualbox xml files and so on). I also added a “basic” project that just has the Fishbone fish moving around.
If you need a starting point have a look at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VK14AuZZoDc
If you ask questions I will try to answer them. Also feel free to report bugs and desired features. Don’t expect me to change something any time soon though.

Crazy. I didn’t even know those exist.

It’s also sad that such a great-looking tool is no longer going to be developed. Is there any way we could persuade you to release it in its current, unfinished state? It may still be useful to others. In fact, you could even put the code up on a sharing site like github, and it could form the basis of a nice community project.
I’m still planning to continue development, probably together with a new game. I don’t feel comfortable releasing the sources though. I made many shortcuts during the development because of the deadline. Letting someone continue on top of that mess does not sound like a good idea. However, I can release the binaries if you like.
I would just need to clean stuff up a bit and write some kind of manual.
I’m not sure what to think of this. Basically, they say that they need $198,000 to make the rift/morpheus game and that making the VB version would cost them another $802,000. I don’t think that is realistic. If they would have said that they would need another ~$100,000 it might have made sense to motivate the community to back.
However, right now it is not more then a bad joke.
No worries. I wanted to hang up a picture like a thousand times before. The hammer hit the nail, the nail hit metal in the wall, the nail backfired and hit my eye. I missed the iris by a good centimeter. I’m already back to 90% sight (from ~50%).

Heh, that’s what I thought when I was waiting for the doctor. She actually said there is a sample case of “The guy who wants to hang up a picture without safety glasses” in each of her training books.
Just a quick update on this: There is no update. I decided to not follow up on the MarioCombat idea. It was a tech-demo anyway and I never planned for a full game. I got some nice feedback but people complaining about borough sprites annoyed me. Even though 4th place is nice it showed me that there isn’t a massive anticipation for a game like that.
Without a game to develop there is no motivation to further develop this tool right now. I should rewrite most of it’s code anyway.
However, instead I followed up with a completely different project. I won’t reveal anything right now because I don’t want to get tons of feature requests again. It is completely different from everything that I have done so far though.
I have been working on that project for quite a while now but in a very slow pace as life and video games are keeping me busy. Right now I’m recovering from a nail hitting my eye but I should be allowed to write code again from next week on.
I never checked if there is any multiplayer code in Faceball. Having the hidden Face2000 enemy and the arena mode menu indicates they were planning for it. I thought about trying to add one for a while but didn’t follow up because it would have been tons of work.
If I would get my hands on a link cable I would make a multiplayer game for sure.

Now this part is unrelated, but I just realized I was missing the optimization option on the VBDE compiler in the makefile, and wow… one function of my C code went from 115 ticks to 32 ticks… simply beautiful. Just had to share that in my excitement!
Greg figured out that his code would run much faster when he used the old 2.95 compiler: http://www.planetvb.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=27790#forumpost27790
Maybe you want to give that a try.
I decided to give this level one more try. I spent way more time figuring out a good strategy then I like to admit. This evening I finally beat it using Mario with a Tanooki Suit and a Cat Suit. After that I’ve beaten it with Luigi, Peach, Toad and Rosalina with the same items. Took a couple of tries each.
Still need to beat that stupid Box house though.

all i see here is that Reggie doesn’t know anything about Nintendo’s past. He really has no clue that Nintendo existed before the Wii/3DS/Wii U. He is such a modern representative of Nintendo products. I recall an interview where he said that he was unfamiliar with the Virtual Boy and could not comment on it coming to the Virtual Console (3DS). Reggie represents the mainstream casual Nintendo gamer and not those who would ever be interested in the Virtual Boy library of games.
Not sure if you are referring to the same interview but I remember him saying he has played every Nintendo system and accessory with the VirtualBoy being the only exception: http://kotaku.com/5690257/argue-for-a-virtual-boy-store-on-the-nintendo-3ds-if-you-can
I wonder if he did by now as I noticed a couple VirtualBoy references made by him recently. For example in his Animal Crossing video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeEbtz55XYI
Heh, I was reading the article with the assumption it was another old EDGE scan. Then I realized they were talking about me. Pretty cool stuff.

I’ve talked to a collector about this cart before and according to him this is not really a VB interface. More likely, Nintendo just reused VB connectors for some kind of debugging interface connection.
Last time I have seen that card a different seller tried to sell it for $650. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nintendo-development-Proto-EAD-cart-N64-/221333838068
