I always feel weird about sending a large amount of money to a total stranger in another part of the world. I took the plunge and ordered a FB+ directly from Richard close to a year ago. I paid him using my Paypal account.
Richard kept me informed every step of the way. When the kit was ready he also let me know that it had been sent out.
I also ordered a Flash Boy box from Chris, the admin of this very site.
Both of them are 100% trustworthy, extremely friendly, and are great to do business with.
Don’t worry about any of it, just order from Richard and then enjoy your FB+
your roms must be padded for flashboy to work with them, so trying to flash non-padded roms will not work. make sure you have the game you want to flash checked in the application (as discussed a few posts up).
i found that the cable that came with the flash boy and a 1 inch adapter that i have are the only two things that work for me. i’ve tried a longer cable but it failed to work, even though the flashboy was detected. i’ve also had mixed results with my usb expansion, so you if you are using one you might want to plug directly into the pc as well.
i’m flashing on xp sp3 without issue. i’ve read that on vista and 7 you may need to run the program in the “administrator” mode.
keep debugging and let us know how it turns out.
edit:: i’ve just attached the version of the flashing software that i am using for my fb+. give it a try!

I just wonder where the author got the information: “The rarest game for the Virtual Boy is Waterworld”
that line was updated so that it assumes far less.

What a awful review. No games were covered, and it was just the stuff everyone already knew.
gbatemp’s avg user is in their 20s and while they may have heard about the vb most know nothing about it. it was these gamers that the review was written for. the goal of the review was to inspire new gamers to try an old system. as a result it is a review of the system including a history, some tech specs, info on how to use it, info on how to make an informed purchase, etc. reviewing the games did not fit into the scope of the review, instead additional links were included so that the reader could use their own time to find out more about the games. i don’t see how the choice to review the system and not the games makes it an “awful review”.
if this game project gets to the point that it requires some type of story then i would love to help.
i have been a gamer since 1983 with my atari 2600. i’ve written many product reviews, short stories, and such. i’ve wanted to merge my love of games and my love for writing into a project for a few years.
that is a really cool piece. if i had it i’m sure i would use it often.
Hey guys,
I missed this whole discussion as real life kept me from my hobbies for the past 6 months. I was curious if the box has that area inside to hold the game, like the retail boxes did?
Either way I would like to add my name to the list. Since I received my Bound High repo cart from Richard I’ve wanted a box and manual to make it complete!
it is so wonderful to see this rom released. thanks a ton for making it possible for everyone to enjoy it, theforce81!
these maps are great! thanks for sharing.
Nintendo Virtual Boy (Japanese) in Rare Promo Box
US $1,499.99 — buy-it-now
@VJ: there are still well over 400 items on US eBay, currently only 80 of which are auctions. Perhaps you were just targeted? Did they provide more information, a reason, or an explanation yet?
i’m thinking it has to do with virtual goods sold on ebay and people who do not send the “information” after the payment has been made.
it would make sense to me that they could simply force users to enter a UPC or serial number if they were going to use the term “virtual” in their auction listing. there isn’t but a large handful of virtual boy related auctions at any one time, it isn’t like they can’t police those.
it takes me 3-4 tries to log in to make a post. the login redirect keeps timing out. i know its not my connection.
I am so knew to soldering and electronics so please forgive me for this question…
After complete the USB powers the controller or how does this work?
The controller will be recognized by direct-x in windows automatically?
I’m considering building a portable gaming computer (nettop or micro-atx) and I am not all that familiar with Linux. How would Linux recognize the controller? Does it behave similar to direct-x and install a generic interface driver?
Thanks!
Hello Dan,
The FlashBoy+ is indeed still being made. The cost is $100 USD. It comes without a box but you can pick one of those up separately if you really want it.
Richard usually asks for 1 donor cart but I think he received enough with the Bounce! stand-alone project that you might be able to get a FB+ without having to send him a cart.
Here is his e-mail: richard.hutchinson@dsl.pipex.com
Richard,
What was the final count, how many of these were actually made up to this point?
=======
I also just received mine and it’s a treat to own a standalone cart. The sticker isn’t as nice as the FB+ sticker (seems a higher DPI could have been used?), but for the rock bottom price of 2 donor carts I find it very hard to complain!
before you start ripping things about (assuming it gets that far), try grabbing a mario’s tennis off ebay. i just snagged two for under $10 with shipping. it would be a very affordable way for you to test the contacts. you might also consider a can of compressed air if you have not already.
this is an interesting project as it would complete the boung high cart i’ve just received. have you guys considered getting KR155E involved? he did make the fb+ box i have and its excellent quality. any thoughts about who will write the manual?
it looks like dust to me and all that dust isn’t a good thing. it means it sat unprotected for YEARS. could have been in a basement somewhere and in rough shape.
i’ve been checking ebay and there are some great deals right now. you might want to contact the sellers and ask the important questions like if the IPD knob (the one you asked about a few posts up) is causing glitch issues if you turn it a bunch of times, do the lenses have scratches, etc.
here are the links:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Nintendo-Virtual-Boy-8-Games-Plug-Battery-Pack-/140546757822?pt=Video_Games&hash=item20b93d54be
there are a few more but most are ending in the next few hours.
keep me posted on the availability of a sticker for the cart. i asked if i could get “a couple” because i want to give 1 or 2 as gifts. i understand if you want to only make 1 per person.

great to hear sign me up plsbtw i don´t know waht is a donor card ( im new here)
i can pay i you want
it just means that the shell of an actual game will be used, so you are “donating” a cart. try to pick two games you don’t care about, like don’t send jack bros. =)
i contacted the seller. he said there is 1 hair line scratch on the red lense and that the system has the glitch ribbon cable problem. he said after using it for 10 or so minutes the glitch went away, but as we all know it just means the glitch problem is starting. still for that price its a good deal considering what you are getting, and the glitch problem can be fixed.
I’m also curious to know if you guys will design a label for the cart. I’m rather interested in picking a few of these up. Will you be asking for money to cover the cost of shipping back to us?

And, slightly off-topic, but since you mentioned FlashBoys, how much do you charge to make those?
$100 USD. includes the FB+, labeled with a FB+ sticker, and a mini-usb cable. The software for flashing can be found here at PlanetVB. Its worth every penny, it’s a top quality product.
