Happy New Year! Here marks the beginning of the year of the Virtual Boy (or the year it turns 20)!

Did anyone else start the year playing some Virtual Boy?
Jack Bros and Hyper Fighting were my choices, although I didn’t do so well, it’s hard to play after a few drinks =P

Mine is like the top picture. I’m not even sure if I can put the stand backwords on my Japanese display..

While I like the idea, I just don’t use my phone to play games. I tried to get into them, but just kept reverting back to my Gameboys and other handheld consoles. I guess I’m more of a ‘button’ guy.

I’ve only made it to like the third fighter in this game, so not sure if that mole lookin thing is the missing robot or what, but it does look like a dome on the head, so “Headome” seems like an appropriate name.

Of you could save RPGs would be perfect since they don’t need split second timing. Pokemon works very well. The original mariobland works good too, and zelda works pretty good too. Solar striker and other airplane shooters would probably work pretty good too.

So after reading this whole post it sounds like someone people are testing this on a Virtual Boy via the FlashBoy and other on there computer with an emulator.

I have been using it on my Virtual Boy via the FlashBoy and it works but almost every game runs too slow to play, about half speed. Still it is really cool work and I can’t wait to see how far it goes.

Sorry for the double post, I couldn’t figure out how to edit my last.

The flashboy is the way to go, playing Gameboy games on an actual Virtual Boy is just awesome.

The speed is amazing considering the 20mhz cpu that’s doing the emulating. I would have expected a slideshow, not decent enough speeds to play a game.

Hey, that’s cool, haven’t seen that one before. That would be nice to have in the collection!

Nice, that’s a great gift! Always wanted one of those.

It’s not Christmas yet, but I doubt I’ll get anything game related to post here anyways. However I did get my Brother Megaman 2 for his NES, since everyone who owns a NES needs a Megaman game.

Nice, I like the idea of a VB power up =P

Ahh cool, glad to see someone here got those prints.

Ahhhhh, Super Bomberman, I thought maybe juust maybe it was for the Virtual Bomberman game that was in the works.

Oh well, still cool regardless

Is the site just for the handhelds?

Aww, what? They say they took out the barcode to keep the integrity of the originals but in the pictures there’s clearly a barcode that looks just like the legit box.

Not cool.

Damn, i want, but i don’t want to know how mich that would cost to ship here

Do you actually have a mosaic box and/or instruction manual to go along with the unit, and if so, does the serial number appear on the instruction manual somewhere? I question whether the unit is originally from a demo-only, mosaic box, since the serial number appears to be too high to be one. Thus, if you simply got the unit without a box or manual, along with a small, Japan-exclusive Store Display, I would say that you got a regular retail unit that happened to be included with the small store display. However, if you do have an original instruction manual showing the same serial number on it, then please attach a pic of it, and I’ll update the list.

No I don’t, it just came with my Japan Store Display. I thought the serial number was below most retail units, but you’re more in the know than I am, so my mistake.

V10037488 has “PLAYLINK” (JPN Demo system)
V10047635 has “PLAYLINK”
V10065621 has “PLAYLINK” (JPN Retail System)

Unit number V10047635 is mine, and it’s a Japan Demo System. Just in case you want to fill in that blank.

Besides the obvious 3D effects which are quite neat, I feel the system has a way of being immersive in such a way most consoles never can. With some head phones on and your eyes peering inside, you become completely submerged into the little red 32-bit world within. Combine the 3D with the immersive factor, and it sports a kind of believability you can’t really quite get elsewhere. I feel I almost teleport when going in and out of the system.

I mean the most beloved handheld in the world, The Gameboy, only had 4 colors as well so it’s strange I often hear that as a major complaint “in the wild”.

I hear you on the immersion point. It’s like entering your own little world while you play. For me it’s almost like going back in time when I play it, which is really cool feeling.

I agree about the point about the Gameboy. People blasted the VB for not being in color, yet a year after the Virtual Boy the entirely Black and White Gameboy Pocket comes out…to an amazing reception! Ok, it was a nicer display than the older Gameboy, but still it had nothing on the VB’s crisp, non ghosting High res display. I just don’t get it.

I was playing Mario’s Tennis last night, and I was just struck by the characters for some reason. I didn’t quite notice it before, but the characters are really the most lively and detailed I have ever seen the Mario gang in any game near that sort of time frame. It’s really cool to see the characters drawn in a similar style to how they were presented in the childrens cartoon books that were available in the early 90’s (Yes I still have my Super Mario 3 book =P). I’m struggling to think of another Mario game where they had this sort of art style..all the games before were the smaller, simpler sprites, and the games after were simple polygonals, and once the hardware got better Mario turned all “computer generated” looking. Kind of made me appreciate the game a little more =D

Cool! The Japanese at the top of the instructions says “Hudson Iron Print”

Really curious if that blurry bit over top of the “Bomber Man” logo says “Virtual” =P

Or… you could just take a couple pairs of cheap, cardboard, anaglyph glasses, cut them in half, and tape the two red halves together. Put on the result, set the SGB to plain greyscale, and enjoy! If you set your TV’s saturation control to 0, it even works with the PlayBox or XStation! In fact, why not just walk around like that and make EVERYTHING look like a VB game?! 😉

Hahaha, that’s exactly my thoughts when I bought these for 2 bucks. Now EEEVERYTHING looks like VB!

Wow, very cool idea!

I like the sound direction you’re going in, I love the upbeat chiptunes.

Pondering #2: It’s not really a big deal to me whether the sound track fits together or if it sounds like it’s from different composers. I guess more variety with the latter, but really, as long as I’m enjoying the music I’m not going to mind either way you take it.

Pondering #3: I like a challenge but it gets frustrating if it’s near impossible. Ninja Gaiden is a good example, I like the game, but I can’t beat it, and it’s frustrating and can deter me from playing it as much as I’d like. What about pulling a Megaman 2? Giving a normal and hard mode? That way it could cater to everyone.

Its totally playable in Japanese. You just can’t read the intro text, or the “tutorial” text they give you along the way. Most of it is pretty self explanatory, don’t step on spikes, this enemy runs fast, this stuff blocks your view.
I actually prefer the Japanese version, Jack Ripper is a much cooler name than what they called him in the US version =P

I put the US one on my flashboy to play through once, just to read the text cause I was curious, but not being able to read it won’t be much of a hindrance.
