Thanks for your ideas! I chose “References”, as it seemed to be the most appropriate term.

About the seperation “Multimedia” (Which might get renamed to just “Media”) and “Images”: It’s right that screenshots are images too, and technically, videos are just moving images. But if I chose to have screenshots under the images tab, I’d need extra tabs for videos and audio.

So I decided for the current solution, which could be seen as a separation between “media” taken directly from the game (screenshots, videos, audio) and the “image” tab, which holds all kinds of related scans (Boxes, Carts, Flyers, etc).

I agree that it’s not a totally clean separation, but the best I can think of. On one hand, I want to group related content in a way that makes sense to not have too many tabs, on the other hand, having “Media” and “Images” under one tab would be too much stuff on one site IMHO.

Not much of interest in that magazine. I had it once and scanned it in, but did not get around to edit the scans and release them yet.

Sure, post the update!

But, since it comes in after the deadline, I am afraid I can’t include that in the ZIP file which can be found in the news post and which should be the base for user votes. :/

You’re right that it’s not a correct term. When the homebrew scene started on the VB, I just adopted the GoodTools naming scheme and did not correct the decision since then.

I have started correcting this by changing all the homebrew ROM names. We now need a new last field name for the serial numbers of homebrew games. Maybe “HBR” for homebrew? “WLD” for “world”? What do you guys think?

I will do more update to the homebrew section as soon as I get around to it. If anyone wants to submit info, images, videos, descriptions, etc of anything (for example your own compo projects), that’d be great!

I’d like to label compo entries and winners somehow, but I am not sure how to do that, yet. An extra tab is a good idea, but I’d also like to label winners somehow. Hmm.

Welcome to 2003! 😉 http://www.planetvb.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=87
A bit more info here: http://www.planetvb.com/modules/interviews/?1

There’s even an english translation patch for Chalvo 55 by LameBoy in existance.

It is indeed a decent game, I played it quite a lot back then. 🙂

And: No ROMs of commercial games please!

Besides, the Homebrew listing of GoodVboy is incomplete and sometimes horribly named (“This Demo Owes ALOT to RunnerPack HelloWorld SpriteExam 1 (PD)”). 😉 I don’t see the point in collecting bad ROMs either.

We could combine the best of different games. Imagine a Metroid style exploration based action adventure. Dark, moody artsy and scary like Silent Hill, immersive and with a good sense of loneliness. Featuring stereoscopic 3D backgrounds and background layers to move to like in VB Wario Land. The main character could be a robot, or a human in an exo suit, that can be updated with various items that the player finds hidden in the huge game world. Eventually the character will be able to fly around, and we’ll achieve gameplay similar to that of Bangaioh.

Q___Q;

Note to myself: For the next compo, ask people to submit screenshots with their projects. 😀

Oh! So that’s how you zoom in. Sorry, I have to admit that I was in a hurry and skipped the readme… Will replace that screenshot!

Of course the participants can vote as well, and of course they can vote for their own project if they want. 😉

But you did download the latest 0.9 development version and not the 0.8 version which did not support VB, right?

There’s a bad dump of this floating around, try finding a good one, that should work.

I would rather do a game that isn’t based on copyrighted content. This way we would avoid legal trouble. Plus, it would give graphic designers, story writers, etc. more creative freedom.

Yes, you’re totally right!

I really love this idea and would be happy to work on it now and then.

We’d definitely need a decent version control system. The question is, which do we choose? I only rented webspace on PVB’s server and don’t have access to the OS to install SVN for example (which is the only CVS I have worked with yet.) A PHP/MySQL solution would be nice, since a nice interface could be integrated into PVB when I have database layer access. The only one I could find (http://asvcs.com/) looks limited though. We’d at least need to be able to commit changes directly from our development environment (like Eclipse) right?

As for the possible type of community game, I’d love to see one of the following:
– Zelda
– Metroid
– Silent Hill (anyone ever played the SH2 demake?)
– Bangaioh

I never managed a bigger software project (did anyone here?), but I imagine that, in order to get the project started, we need someone (DogP?) to lead it all and write a basic engine upon others can build. We need a good abstration first, which will then help developers to work in the same direction.

While the engine is being written, non-developers could lay out a story, maps, dialogues, create graphic and sound assets. Eventually, we’d have to build the actual game upon the engine we developed using the assets and following the story and scripts created by our artists.

So, my favorite would be a Zelda game, but there already is one in development… Now, I don’t know what DanB’s plans for his Zelda game are, or how far he got, but this might be a good starting point, should he be willing to share his code. Dan? :->

This one looks very nice, you’re a real graphic wizard! Pretty impressive to see something like this from someone who has just started programming.

But, I need the complete source for the compo. Could you please post all the *.h files as well?

I am checking everything out right now, some impressing stuff we got there. 🙂 I will eventually post a single ZIP file containing everything on the front page, I have just started compiling it and making screenshots. Some sources are incomplete, so I’ll have to wait for people to post the complete sources.

Chris, can you please upload the complete source code of the last version you posted (gosub3d20101008.zip)? It only includes the main C file, but should come with all the #included *.h files in order to be complete.

It’s #015. There’s not even a #075 yet. 🙂

Yes. But you need to know that not every loader works with every batch of FlashBoy units. You’ll probably have to try out different older versions of the loader until you find one that works.
