parts of the FB/FB+ are soldered by hand. there is always the potential for problems. the issue everyone has with the usb is the cable used. the way in which you described your problem seems to be with the internals or the usb connector itself. something that goes beyond a simple fix of swapping out the usb cable.
if it isn’t working and can’t be debugged simply by switching out the cable, contact richard and ask to have it repaired. he is the nicest fellow and will sort you out.
Good to know. My husband and I cleaned out the connector real well when we brought home the console and we’ve been playing with our friend’s PowerPak and the California Games I just picked up. I have the full NES/Famicom rom set but if mine don’t work with the N8, I can always use the ones you used.
I have the Everdrive GB and I friggin love the thing. I definitely want to get the SNES one next and bring home my SNES and my PS2, XBOX, and Atari 2600. Not sure what got into my husband but he’s been begging me to bring home the consoles from my dad’s so I gotta do this before he changes his mind haha.
This is a really nice treat for those involved with the competition. My opinion is that it should stay that way. I do not see a need for this to be released. It will only use up more of the limited amount of connectors and shells, which could be put to better use as future reproductions or polished homebrew releases. A collection of demos (finished or not) is unappealing to me personally, especially since I own a FB and FB+.
Clean the NES connector before you plug in the N8. Dirty contacts or old/bent pins are the #1 cause of issues on Krikzz forum.
Grab a GoodNES or No-Intro set. There are so many dumps floating around and Krikzz does all his testing with GoodNES verified ROMs. Many users swear by No-Intro, which is why I mentioned it.
i don’t recall reading something that offered an affordable replacement. if one does exist then these games could be made into additional collectibles to help raise money for the reproductions. they could be placed into a custom 3d printed shell and dropped back into the box.
here are my thoughts, which are somewhat disjointed. i ran a coding compo for an independent gaming community. we had 5,000 in prize money to give away. the money came from sponsors. simply put, i contacted various sites who would gain something from advertisement in the compo and asked for donations. a bunch stepped up. some of the money came from ad-sense revenue, something this site isn’t generating.
the compo was broken down into categories by system and type of release. for a vb compo i would just break it down by release (game, app, demo, other (pc tools, etc)). i would allow every dev to release 1 project for each category and allow them to win in every category. if you let them do more than 1 they tend to not focus on their projects and instead knock out quick demos or incomplete projects, at least, this was my experience with being involved in coding compos. from their perspective they have an entry worthy of a win, but from everyone else who doesn’t/can’t code, the quality of releases drops off and there is less to enjoy. from my perspective, the point of a compo is to generate interest in a system and to see some amazing new things released for it.
asking for donations is like asking people to buy into something. if you are going to have a buy-in you will alienate devs who just want to make homebrew from the ones who see it as a gambling competition. i run a weekly billiard tournament here and i find that buy-ins scare some people off and then bring out the worst in others who only see that they spent money and expect to win the pot.
as for prizes… money is the top motivator. physical goods are nice but its like getting clothing for xmas when you really wanted cash to buy the new uncharted game. another idea would be getting that new cart ready and pairing it with a vb-link cable. that would make for a nice prize and it is something within the realm of possibility.
at the end of the day it is still the VB and this community is pretty much it when it comes to the VB. do your best but don’t expect pots of money, tons of publicity, or commercial quality releases. have fun with it. =)
a game like this would do great things for raising awareness about the virtual boy. it may even spark interest in homebrew development. at the very least, it will put our beloved console and probably this site in the news for a time. i don’t see the harm in a little reeducation. =)

I would love to see this loaned out to a video game/electronic’s related museum. I’ve never seen an official VB-to-VB link cable. I was under the impression that it did not exist. It really should be put on display for a time.
you can use either tap on either system, you just need to match it with the right cord because of the size of the plug. so if you get the japanese tap, get a nes/famicom power adpater.

the japanese ac tap uses the nes/famicom plug. i’ve read some where that the master system plug will also work, but don’t quote me on that. the us ac adapter set uses the snes/super famicom plug.
i noticed that the first time i plugged mine into W7 it took awhile for the USB driver to install. so maybe just plug it in and let it sit for 10 minutes. on XP it always worked instantly. you can install the official virtual XP into W7, maybe that will work? probably not worth the effort if the problem is related to your cart, but you never know.
either way, don’t panic. get in touch with Richard and he will help sort you out. it’s all worth the wait. the first time you boot up a prototype, translation, or homebrew, you’ll be happy you had patience. =)
just to clarify, you aren’t hearing that little Windows chime when something is connected via USB? if you are, then it may be the software. I recall different builds of the software floating around. I’ll attach the one I am using with Windows 7.
i hear the chime no matter what USB cable i use, but found that only the cable Richard included works for flashing. Why? i’ve absolutely no idea, that is a conversation better left to the engineers on this board.
you should probably just contact Richard directly and discuss this with him. he is a really nice guy and will help you out.

i got my VB used in the box for $140. it came with 4 games. it looks essentially “mint” and had no cosmetic flaws aside from the swirls on the plastic lenses (due to improper cleaning by the last owner).
every mario tennis card i bought as a donor was .99 off ebay. from what i saw they usually sold for around $5. i always assumed anyone paying 10+ was because they wanted it now and couldn’t wait for a better price. wario land usually sells between 20-30, depending on the quality and if it still has a working battery. galactic pinball i never checked for.
anyone can say a thing is new and only opened to be tested. you hope they are telling the truth but in reality it is probably just a hardly used system they are trying to make seem more appealing to ebayers. if you really want a new in the box system, they are out there and they come up for auction. there was one recently on gamegravel but the asking price was crazy. no matter what, in time, they all suffer from the ribbon cable issue. so new or not it may not work correctly out of the box.

an odd off-topic bump of a 3 yr old thread provides a great opportunity to keep the on-topic conversation going.
my first suggestion is a cheap pair of clear glasses, something one would buy for fashion. You can usually find them at .99 type stores. then color in the lenses with a red and blue sharpie. i can’t recall if it required any special kind of sharpie or of the normal ones will work. it was a long time ago that i found out about this, so more research may be needed before this project is attempted.
comic shops usually have 3D red/blue glasses. i would go in and ask if they have anything in 3D, if they aren’t sure then dig through the back issue bin. any half way decent shop should have a “number/#” section where old 3D books will be. the shop i once worked at had a few for $1 or less.
chinese mega stores, like dealextreme, will often carry 3D glasses. you should be able to find a pair for under $3 and in most cases get free shipping.
eBay is also a great source for 3D glasses. try to buy in bulk to save on shipping or contact the seller and ask for cheaper methods. realistically, from within the US, you could ship a pair flat between two thin pieces of cardboard in a normal letter envelope with a forever stamp.
those are my suggestions, i hope they help someone now or in the future when they bump this thread in another 3 years. ;]
