The brand is called Elmex (http://www.elmex.de/ the orange one). No idea if you can buy it outside of Germany.
I simply used a paper tissue and carefully polished the display for some seconds. I then removed the toothpaste with a slightly wet tissue.
It really sound silly when you write it down.

Tooth Paste worked? I always thought that one was an urban myth =P I might actually have to try it. Have you tried it on other displays? (Specifically Gameboy ones)
I used it for several mobile phone displays over the years and for DVDs. I don’t know what’s in there but it works just fine.
Thanks for all the comments. Yeah, I took most of the sprites from Yoshi’s Safari. The gun obviously comes straight from Doom.
I actually spend a month or so on build a supporting tool first. It is basically a tool that allows me to convert images, define sprites, build animations, create levels and objects and assign actions to those objects (like moving/jump something around, flicker, trigger an animation and so on). Actions can trigger other actions so you can build allot of stuff just buy using the tool and not coding. The tool itself might have been a good submission as well but it is not in a state that I would be proud of it.
If you look at the code you might notice that most .h are generated by that tool. The demo I released used to be my tech-demo for testing that tool. After finishing the core part of the tool I wrote the game part of the demo from the scratch to have a clean start. That took about 2 weeks.
As I said before I never planned to make a game like this.
However, I actually like how it turned out. So the question is if I should proceed making this a full game or not. I guess I could make it something big in about 3 month or so. However, if no one is interested I will rather spend my time on a different project. So if you want this to be a full game just leave a comment here.
OK, I tried this with several roms now an I think I’m doing something wrong. The first thing I noticed is that if I pad a rom it is broken afterwards (The menu is empty). I worked around that by putting multiple games into the rum until it reaches 2mb.
However, every game I try seems to be unplayable because of glitches. I tried Metroid II, Megman and Super Mario Land 2.
The only game that worked for me is Super Mario Land. It also had some glitches but I could play through the first levels. It is the same in mednafen.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m heavily impressed that this is even possible. I just try to figure out what I’m doing wrong.
Just played through the first 2 levels at day and night. Cool stuff. I like how everything runs at a solid framerate with the affine background and plenty of sprites in the foreground.

Here’s a picture of the game in action.
EDIT: There seems to be some sort of bug where I can’t attach pictures. I’ll try again later.
EDIT: Why aren’t PNG images allowed? Here is a GIF one.
Thanks for the pics. I just played. Even though it might not the most technical advanced entry it is a very clever game design.
Made it to 13. Man that stuff is addictive.
Hah. I hoped I could skip this trend. Now I need to try it.
Argh. I’m at work right now. Can you post some pics? This sounds interesting.
Wow. That is a pretty cool demo. I knew there was a reason to stay up.

Just played though the demo. Your wireframes look so awesome in 3D. If I ever get some free time I would love to build a level editor for it.
I actually decided to start over. So I focused on tool support for some time. The plan was to have the tool working at the January. I kind of reached that point today (not everyting is perfect yet but good enough I guess).
Now I started building an actual game/demo again. There are still 3 weeks left so I guess I can come up with an small demo.
So they are intended to hold the dustcover? That’s brilliant.
Hey Kr155e,
if there ever is another coding competition try to pick a time-frame where not all of the following things happen:
– a new Mario game being released
– a new Assassins Creed game being released
– a new Zelda game being released
– a HD remake of a Zelda game being released
– a new Scribblenauts game being released
– a new GTA (!!) game being released
– a new Tim Schafer Point&Click game being released
That would be great. Seriously, if I would care about Pokemon I wouldn’t even dare to think about submitting something.
I don’t remember if it ever has been printed but you can buy a replacement here: http://www.planetvb.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=4984&forum=3

Hello
I have a question. What’s the difference between the Faceball Proto and Faceball remastered edition? Thank youOne is the original Faceball prototype that was found with 1 set of levels and not all the music available, the remastered one is a more finished version including the full 4 sets of levels and all the games original music
the remastered edition contains custom levels. http://www.planetvb.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=5160 it is not a completed “prototype”.
Well, it is a remastered version of the prototype. No one knows what the original developers were aiming for. I think I never said it is “completed” prototype. The back of the Box says that it is “finalized Rom-Hack of the prototype”. I meant to say that the Rom-Hack is complete, not that I rebuild the game as it was supposed to be. I wrote that mainly so that everyone who buys it from ebay instantly knows it is a ROM hack and not an official game.
About the differences to the prototype: It has 56 all new levels that are challenging enough to keep you busy for some time. They can be beaten though. The prototype only has 14 very easy levels. You can play though the prototype in under an hour. I reactivated allot of stuff that was hidden in the rom (Music, enemy, enemy behavior, menu images). It also has some other minor changes like a different a start screen, tweaked controls and altered credits. I often forget to mention that I also fixed the score. It will sum up so that you can so your final score at the end instead of having only the score per stage.
I thought about this as well. I still have some arduinos lying around. I understood that the protocol is basically SPI so a connection should be possible. I also have several shields (wifi, ethernet, xBee). An Arduino is quite Big though. However, there are smaller versions of then the one I own. You could also connect it with a cable and have it lying on the table. It would definitely be a expensive solution.

This is how I have my games. I just wish someone would post covers for all the wonderful games from Tusk and co.
I posted one for Faceball: Remastered a whole while ago.

(Slight spoilers)I know it’s a stretch, but the last stage of Super Mario 3D World (the last regular stage anyway) is a huge tower stretching into the clouds. Reminded me of Mario Clash! And when climbing up the tower, Bowser crashes through the wall occasionally to claw at you, reminded me of the fishes in the water stage of Wario Land…
Noticed the Tower as well. Also liked the Link easter egg.
