heh not even close 🙂

🙂 pretty cool. I just checked and I still have the vector graphics of the translated Space Squash manual. So if there are some typos or stuff I can provide you guys with an improved version.

As I switched Notebooks lately I have to re-install and configure all kinds of stuff before I can really start looking into what’s the issue with Space Squash.

Hehe, I didn’t made the connection either. I would love to have a translated Fishing as well. Tell me when you run into technical problems. Maybe I can come up with something.

When you say that the English version for Space Squash is not fully translated yet, does this mean that a programmer is already lined up to finish up the controls screen and the character names on the versus screens?

I know you and your brother got a bit stuck with finishing the translation of space squash (the data was saved in a different way). I was hoping a programmer might take a look at it..but I haven’t had anyone in particular lined up. Did you want to give it another shot ? anyone else want to work on it ?

The last time I talked with my brother about it, he informed me that he was completely stumped on both the controls screen and the character names on the versus screens. I wouldn’t count on him being able to figure out how to hack them and modify them accordingly. He explained to me in detail the problems that would have to be overcome, but I don’t think I would be able to relay them correctly, so I won’t even make an attempt to do so.

I will be back home on Wednesday and have a couple of free days. I will start looking into this then. Maybe I can come up with a fix. If Greg has some time he could write me what the problem is.

I’m still planning to look into this. I only had very little time lately so I didn’t start yet.

Also: nice find. Do you think you can reactivate them in the game?

It is not like there is a better alternative.

Is it already planned that thunderstruck or Virtual_Ben will be making an instruction booklet for Fishbone?

Will Krisse be making an instruction booklet for BLOX 2?

I might do a booklet for Fishbone. I have some cool ideas. I also started on an updated Boxart.

Thanks. You’re only crazy if you buy games with no intent to use ’em. Games want to be played, ya know?

Quick question. How long did you folks wait for your games or at least a confirmation note? I don’t want to seem impatient, I just want to know my payment went through and that the games were still available. I didn’t see anything that indicates how many are left.

*Ho-ly crap. It figures my comment would be found by someone like you. Just saw your collection. Whew.

I usually have to wait around 3-4 weeks but only because I live in Germany. Just sent Tusk a PM and he will tell you if he received your order and when your stuff ships.

That’s the last reason my wallet hates me. Although I couldn’t find much info or any screenshots I took the chance since the production runs were so limited.

This is the first time I’ve bought homebrew or unofficially produced carts. I’ve considered it before but my problem is that I’ve collected so many games over the years it’s tough to keep playing them all. Often these games have abnormally high prices or sell out before I ever knew they were made.

There’s just something unique about the VB plus the fact it’s the only full set I own with there being only 14 US games. Since the JP games are so expensive and the library so limited the Flashboy cart is next on my list.

Hehe, I hope you will enjoy those game. I am not much of a collector either. I buy games which I intend to play. I honestly think the repos/homebrews released so far are totally worth their money. That’s why I like to point new members towards those games, as they are often not that easy to spot. In the end the number of cards made is very limited so it would be a shame if someone misses his chance to buy it.

Hey All!

We’re proud to announce the released of the long awaited packaging for the Faceball protos that have been handed out to those kind enough to donate to the cause. Now here’s your chance to give those cold, lonely, and naked, carts the homes they deserve.

I guess it comes without the white inlay?

Mine arrived today. I looks great. However, one of the corners has a minor scratch, properly happened during shipping. Maybe you can go back to using the paper-towel wrapping instead of a plastic bag next time.

Hmm, but why spent money on changing the text if nothing else was planned for the port? My best guess is that nintendo planned some additional accessories for the vb that would have been connected using the link port and they changed the text during early development to not confuse users.

That could be… though I never saw any hints that anything else was considered (barely saw any reference to the link cable). I’m guessing that they knew they were never going to make the link cable, so they got rid of PLAYLINK to reduce the number of calls asking “Where can I get a PLAYLINK cable for my PLAYLINK port?”

That, or another interesting thing is that the US manual calls it the GameLink port. Is it called PlayLink in the Japanese manual? Maybe they changed it to EXT. so all regions (JP, US, and presumably EU if it ever made it there) could use the same mold without inconsistencies on GameLink, PlayLink, etc.

DogP

Maybe there is a hidden feature in those VirtualBoys to… wait for it… play Link in Mario Tennis.

Got my card and smily as well. Someone shot the smily in the head.

Thanks bigmak. Now I need to buy that box to make it complete…

DogP wrote:
Interesting… I haven’t looked at many JP systems, but the ones that I had seen all had PLAYLINK (most were demo systems, so maybe that’s why).

You can clearly see that they modified the mold from PLAYLINK to EXT. (PLAYLINK looks just like CONTROLLER… EXT. has a noticable rectangle around it, likely where the mold was modified), so I’d guess at some point in the run, they realized that the link cable might not happen, so they changed to EXT. Since the VB was released in Japan first, the mold was probably changed before any VBs made it to the US.

I spoke to Krisse before about Mansion of Insmouse: Mario Madness Edition, and he said the reason why he only wants to post the patch in a somewhat prominent place is for legality issues. I guess it is legal to make a patch for a game, but it is then illegal to apply the patch to an illegal ROM and then play the game. Thus, he will put the patch on the site but not the patched ROM, so if someone wants to find the patched ROM, they will have to search through the forums and find where I posted it on my own volition, without getting permission from Krisse. I guess this would all apply to Faceball as well. Since Faceball:Remastered is a patched ROM, the patch as well as patching program would have to be released as separate items, in order for them to find a prominent place on the site. (Although, having a whole News article about the patched ROM with link to it seems rather prominent already to me.)

Since game patches are allowed prominent places on the site, I would suggest that “Game Patches” appear on the GAMES drop down menu beneath “Homebrew.” I think a lot more people would readily find them and use them if they appeared there.

Well… yeah. I get that there are legal issues with publishing Rom hacks. However, they can already be downloaded from the forum post. On top of that, I don’t understand why ROM hacks can’t be handled the same way the commercial ROMs are handled.

I think Minestorm owns a dumper. Not sure if it works for prototypes.

Benjamin Stevens wrote:

Yes, if I receive help from someone(s), I will gladly dump and freely release the ROMs for comparison purposes.

I don’t currently have a VB dumper in my possession. If one was mailed to me, I would dump the games and even make fresh dumps of the commercial versions and then return the dumper to the sender. I’ve heard before that the EPROM carts don’t require the same kind of dumper as the commercial carts, but I don’t currently know how to dump the EPROM carts either, so if a VB dumper for commercial carts cannot be sent to me for this purpose, then I would need to be taught the other way to dump the EPROM carts, which I guess doesn’t require as much as the commercial carts.

3 more prototype carts have been added to the old collection. 2 of them contain Panic Bomber and the third one contains Jack Bros. (both Japanese versions). Once again, I took apart each prototype cartridge and made high resolution scans of both sides of the PCB as well as the shell pieces for each.

Do you consider dumping them so that they can be compared on byte level?

It is just a wild guess as I never saw the sources but maybe you have to use the timer interruped to play your music instead of calling your funtions from the main loop.

How do you get the wav into the ROM? Did you code a converter or something?

Now this is how the game should have been if released, you guys have made a game that was just ok and turned it into one of the best version than on any other system. Great level designs and fair game play but it is no walk in the park, you really need to think about what your doing or they will come from behind and get you!
Brilliant work guys. Thanks very much.

Thank you.
