Heh, well to be fair, I wouldn’t expect an undergrad in “Fine Art” to have a clue how to program a VCR, let alone figure out how to program an old video game system. I’m guessing their professor would have no expectation of them actually writing the code… it’s probably the artsy presentation of it that matters. On a side note… does anyone still have a VCR??? Maybe that saying needs an update. How about programming a DVR?

My wife still has her VCR and some tapes.

This looks great! I did notice a few things that could use a little work though. I noticed that the screen that you use to adjust the focus and IPD as well as the background in the stage select screen still have the Japanese name showing. Other then that, I dont see anything that could use fixing at this moment. Great job!
I actually like having them still in Japanese. I changed the start screen mainly so that the game easily can be distinguished from the prototype. It wasn’t so much about providing a translated game.

I wonder where in the world he ever got the alleged title “Insane Mouse Mansion.”Maybe someone told him it as a joke, knowing he would then repeat it multiple times in the video. Surprisingly, he almost got the title right when reading the Japanese title screen, yet he didn’t seem to make the connection to the fact that his initial title given is bogus.
Yeah, the rom was named that and I didn’t make the connection to Lovecraft. >.< I just passed along the wrong translation. Lesson learned - do the research, even for the quick and fun videos. Apologies to all! I really do hate some of the "bash on the virtual boy" tone of some of these articles, the experience is freaking fantastic and VB had some great games. --Bruce
Hey, you have been featured on kotaku multiple times. Mirros Edge looks pretty cool on the Rift. The above video got featured as well (http://kotaku.com/as-soon-as-the-oculus-rift-came-out-you-knew-it-was-go-483863570). They simply copied the title from your video so they got it wrong as well. People in the comments get crazy because of that. 🙂
If you want to play some other VB games that then get featured on Kotaku here are some I would like to see:
– GameHero
– Fishbone
– Faceball: Remastered
*cough*

Just congrats on being the #1 poster. Very impressive how active in the community you are, and continue to be. We are all better off for this (game content and the continuous flow of info).
Luckily I’m not #1 poster. This would be really scary, especially since I’m only an active member for less then one and a half years. I didn’t noticed that I was writing allot until I saw the top 10 poster badge in my profile. It is mainly to my frequent updates when I’m into a project though.

Here is what changed since the original demo-game:

This is a bit confusing to me. Did you intend to include the current level editor in the zip folder, or do you plan to release it at a later date after making more changes? Right now, I only find the new ROM in the zip folder.
I will release the level editor later including all sources. I wanted to include our level designs as well, if that’s ok for you.
I like that VirtualBoy games might be played by a wider audience due to the hype around the Oculus Rift. There are certainly some good games in the library and only few had the chance to enjoy them in 3D.
I hesitated to fund the Rift because I thought I rather wait for the consumer version then paying 300$ for the dev prototype. Still, it looks like a cool experience and I really would like to get my hands one of those dev kits…
Great to finally see a repo of an homebrew game.

Cool! But why not Blox 2, it’s the better
game(imo).
I think there is still a problem with the save function in blox 2.
That’s strange. It should go to fullscreen if you set video.fs to 1. Just drag and drop a .vb onto the mednafen.exe after you copied the config. Note that mednafen will change the config file if you start it. Meaning, if you leave fullscreen mode it will set video.fs to 0. You should also make sure your graphics card supports the resolution specified by vb.xres and vb.yres.

that would be awesome, actually 😀 thanks!
Apparently my config got lost so I hacked together a new one. It is better then my previous one but still not perfect. madnefen will display the game fullscreen sidebyside but the image wont fill the whole screen. The config is optimized for full hd. If you compare my config with the original one you will see what I changed. Would be cool if you could post an improved version.
I once played vb games using mednafen on my 3d tv using sideBySide mode. The configuration can be a little tricky but if you want to I can search for my config file.

Awesome gesture! I hope some of the community take you up on your offer and make some really snazzy games.Thank you, in advance!
It was about time. And maybe the Midi-Converter will finally find his way to the tools section as it now has a GUI and is pretty easy to use.
I don’t want to sound mean but isn’t it cheating if you pay someone to do your homework? There are plenty of examples available on this site that should allow someone with a basic knowledge of c to put the graphical part together within some days.

that’s pretty cool to the point that i would like to experience it. is there any more info on how it works, what he is using, how it was accomplished it, is it a special build, etc?
He didn’t say anything but you can see that he simply runs the emulator in side by side mode. This is pretty cool as you could use mednafen to play pretty much every vb game.

Sounds like you guys are making good progress with all of the repo stuff. I really have to get those stupid faceball levels done. Mabe next weekend.HAH..I won’t have the connectors for that game for a month +..u got time man. I think u just want to get it over with 🙂

Actually, I don’t care too much about the cart release but you are right: I really want to get this over with. I’ve put so much work into it (not as much as into Fishbone but still) that I would like to release the final ROM soon. As usual, designing/testing all of the levels takes allot of time. Also it is a surprisingly boring task. On top of that work has been keeping me really busy the last couple of weeks (working on weekends really sucks).

This thing looks awesome. I have donated a last minute $333 last night, now can’t wait for the Oculus to arrive in December – if they can adhere to their schedule now that they fundraised 10 times their initial goal. A friend of mine will be receiving his Leap Motion prototype dev kit in December as well, which ia a new motion tracking system. Maybe we’ll try to combine both systems.Anyway, I hope Ryphecha got an Oculus Rift as well and will add a special display mode to Mednafen. 😉
Did you got yours yet?
