Thanks to morintari’s great 3D artwork, the book looks far more presentable than what it would have been if I had been responsible for all of the artwork. If I had done it all alone, then all of the images in the book would simply be colored-in screenshots of the game being played on an emulator, which about sums up the extent of my artistic abilities.

I just got done play-testing the whole game, and everything looks great! The only opponents that ever mentioned their own names were Paozo and Lyone, and since their names did not get altered/shortened, no inconsistencies arose from the new, shortened names in relation to the old translations.
Thus, I would say that your ROM in post #48 of this thread is the one to use for the cart release in the future.

One letter cutting into the picture should probably look okay for all of them, so any names that are 6 or less characters should still be fine. I’m worried about how bad it will look for the character names that are 7 or more characters. Would you be able to show screenshots for what it looks like for BURDLEE and KOMOREE? As for Monki-DK, I think the “DK” is pretty silly sounding anyway, so lets just shorten his name to “MONKI.” Here is the new modified list of translations.

I looked into how the game handles the character names this evening. Somehow I didn’t run into the problems Greg had so far. I guess I’m using a different approach. I figured out how the game handles the names and where they are stored in the ROM. I can change the names using the characters that are loaded to the memory. Meaning I can change what is written there, but only to other Japanese characters. There are some Latin letters (B D E K L N O Q R X Z) but I will need more to write the correct names there.
The solution to this is simple. I will have to copy some new letters to the memory. Well, but not this evening.

I think many people will agree that of the 8 Japan-only games, Space Squash is by far the best and, therefore, deserved a North American/English release the most. It will be great to see that dream realized at last!

Thus, I would recommend sending PVB User: UncleTusker a PM, informing him that you already bought the extras and asking him if you can simply purchase one of the 25 carts when they are made available in the near future, since you didn’t realize that they could all be purchased at one time soon.

What I was thinking could be done is that once I’ve figured out how the modified and shortened manual should look, I could send you a pdf file of the new manual that shows how all of the new and condensed text as well as screenshots are to be laid out on each page, but my more simple-looking file won’t contain any of the backgrounds or special images that you’ve already made for the manual, and then you could use that as the basis to modify the existing manual that you still have saved accordingly. I would also send you each of the individual screenshots as their own separate files, which are to be used as replacements for the old scanned screenshots (unless you want to replace them yourself by playing through the game and capturing screens similar to the ones that appear in the current instruction booklet). This way, you should simply have to reduce the total number of pages of the current manual (I think I’ll try to shrink it down to about 20), for the most part modify the current text that is already there, and replace the current screenshots with the new ones, while the rest of the manual should remain largely the same. Does that sound like too much trouble? I’m guessing that I won’t begin work on this for a few more weeks, though.

I think a lot of rework on the first manual is going to have to occur. Uncle Tusk said that the less pages for a manual, the better, and right now, the original manual has a lot of pages, and the information on them can be condensed into far fewer pages, so I will probably try to do that. Plus, the current translation is a very literal translation of the Japanese text, which doesn’t read very smoothly to an English-speaker, admittedly. Thus, I was going to try to reword it to make it more presentable and similar to the official English VB instruction booklets. Not only that, but Emulator screenshots should be made to replace the poor quality scans of the in-game screenshots on the original instruction booklet pages, so I was also planning to make those.

Yeah… I did have plans to make translations for Virtual Fishing, but I keep finding Virtual Boy-related reasons to put it off. To be honest, Virtual Fishing interests me the least of all of the Japan-only games. Right now, I’m continuing to help out the Uncle Tusk team with the planned future releases. I’m currently working on the inner pages for the English instruction booklet for SD Gundam Dimension War, which will be included with the cart and box that will be released in the near future. This might take me a few more weeks to complete. Then, I think I’ll be the one making the inner pages for the Faceball: Remastered Instruction Booklet since I made the inner pages for Faceball VB. That might not take me too long since I can use the Faceball VB pages as a starting point. Then, my help might be needed for instruction booklets for Space Squash and Blox 2 and who knows what else… not too sure about those, though. In addition, I want to make a new Mansion of Insmouse game using HorvatM’s new InsmEdit 1.2. By the time all of that is done, there might be new Virtual Boy stuff with which I can occupy myself, which could push translating Virtual Fishing even further back on my list of things to do. Thus, if you are motivated to translate Virtual Fishing and get that cleared off my list of things to do, I am all for that, especially if you can also make a translation patch for the game itself! That will save me from having to bug my brother about making one for me again. 🙂

In case it may be helpful to you, I thought I would let you know that a lot of the information in the Japanese instruction booklets appearing on the first several pages is almost exactly the same across all of them. Thus, it may save you some time to look at the translations I made for the other 7 Japan-only games. To find them, simply go to Games>Released Games>, click on one of the Japan-only games, then click on the “Manuals” tab and then click on the “Translation” link under the instruction booklet image on the left. This will take you to my translation thread for that particular game, which contains all of the Japanese text of the instruction booklet in digital format as well as my translations for such.

Yeah, this game is definitely the Holy Grail of all commercially released video games across all systems ever made. I’ve read that there are only about a dozen complete-in-box copies of NTSC Stadium Events confirmed to be still in existence, and a sealed copy of NTSC Stadium Events sold on Ebay 3 years ago for $41,300.00, but Wikipedia states that the winning bidder never paid.
It appears that the above seller is hoping to break the record selling price with a copy that is not even sealed. Perhaps he would be willing to accept any offer over $40,000.00.

The last time I talked with my brother about it, he informed me that he was completely stumped on both the controls screen and the character names on the versus screens. I wouldn’t count on him being able to figure out how to hack them and modify them accordingly. He explained to me in detail the problems that would have to be overcome, but I don’t think I would be able to relay them correctly, so I won’t even make an attempt to do so.

Apparently, the photo in the auction is indeed a photo of a genuine CIB NTSC Stadium Events, but the photo does not belong to the person who is running the auction. The person who is running the auction Photoshopped out the original information on the sticky note that appears on the cart in the photo and Photoshopped in his own information on the sticky note.
Now, if he truly has the CIB Stadium Events in his possession, why would he alter an old photo that does not belong to him and present it as the only photo for the auction? Why not take all-new pictures of it? Thus, it seems that he is intending to send the winning bidder an item that does not appear in the photo or else send no item at all and try to run away with the money by some means.

It is so great to hear that the ability to edit monsters has been added! As I mentioned before, I hoped to create an all-new game once the ability to edit the starting positions of the monsters had been added. I still plan to do this, but I will likely have to wait until I’m done helping the Uncle Tusk team with all of the instruction booklets and what not for the planned near-future releases.

Sounds good. If anything changes and someone is needed to make an instruction booklet for Fishbone, I would be willing to do it, but I would much rather it be made by one of the game-makers. Thus, I won’t do any work on an instruction booklet for Fishbone unless I am called upon.
