This is one of the best home-brew games that has been coded for the VB, and I’ve got nothing but props for it. It’s got a great engine, has replay value (I think I’ll put it in and play it today), and the graphix are great. I really would love for a sequel to come out with any improvements he wanted to put in it. And, I was really hoping he would come with another entry to this years competition.

Akumie..I don’t understand you. Please- just be more supportive..or at least…try to be nice for once. When I read your posts, it makes my head hurt.

Wow, I think this thread was hijacked, but anyway.

Again, wow..but this time for what you did. Like last year and MK’s virtual racing…I didn’t think the virual boy could do….what you did it do..hrms I didn’t say that right, and I’ll start again

wow

thats enough

Now, it’s not really a game yet. Not sure even what kind of game it will be when your done, but it is impressive. The graphix remind me a lot of hard driving (don’t hit that cow!). I remember pumping a lot of money into that machine when it first game out (even thou it was more expensive then other games at the time) The 3-D free roaming environment you created is good….VERY GOOD. I’m impressed dude…thumbs way up here

Only 2…not really negative points

1. Not sure about the game play when it’s actually done

2. This really isn’t a negative…BUT MAN I was ready to play Yeti3D with enemies and bullets. I was SURE you were working on this…I was so ready…so….ready

I would love to see a zelda type of game. We never got dragon hopper, and I think it would really fill a void that the vboy has.
Now when I say ‘zelda type’, I’m thinking an adventure game where you start off and have to explore and kill enemies. Find items to upgrade your char, other items to let you re-explore area’s you couldn’t get too (like link and the raft..or metroid and turning into a ball ect..) Hidden areas, shops, walls you can walk thru.
There are many games like this metroid, simon’s quest, zelda 2 would be side scrolling. Zelda would be more of a top view. The vboy can do both well..wario was a great side scrolling adventure, but I was thinking grafix wise more on the likes of Jack bros. Having each char (enemies and friends alike) in 3-d from the top view would look amazing. Puzzles could also be in 3-d…dropping blocks or jumping down from upper levels to gain access or kill monsters on lower levels could be done very well and cleverly.
I guess I would also want (hard to ask for things when you can’t code) a game that could only be done on a 3-D device. With unique elements in it. Not just a rewrite, but a great unique 3-d game.

Gosh, it’s been awhile, but I thought I picked up mine for under 200..but it’s been awhile and I’m not sure. Mine was also missing one of the flyer’s on the side.

Yea, that’s what it was. It’s a shame 🙂 all my usb ports are on the back of the computer. Seem’s like I can’t use an extender or hub. But, that’s oki 🙂 it’s worth it.

You guys made me bust out my display box 🙂 and yes on both counts. It has the black line on the top and its white cardboard on the inside. Now I have to figure out how to put this back into the plastic wrap I had over it…hrms

Hey KR155E
I see you can post reviews of the coding competition software. I didn’t think most of these were actually completed yet. Maybe Tron is (have to ask the coder), while the midi player is more of a development tool and Rpacks bounce was more like a demo (although a pretty damn cool one)…but the other games I think are still in development. Should we be able to review them when the are not yet complete ? I know they were released in terms of the competition, but not sure if they were ment to be released as finished.

Demo’s are really just used to try to learn how to code something specific or to show someone something. I don’t think those should really be reviewed, I mean..if your trying to show some words going across the screen..and you do…what do you review ? just say good job and be done with it

I don’t know of any released games that you can’t review. Which ones ? If its games that are homebrew …you have to ask yourself if the games are actually done yet. If its a game that’s not even done there’s no reason to review it. I guess you can give creative ideas to the programmer of these games, but even then I’d be careful. They are putting a lot of their own time into making these games and prob. have a vision of what they want done. Now if you find a BUG in the game..that’s a totally different thing…

I guess I’m not sure what your trying to ask.

-Eric

Yea, now that I read that, I think someone told me that before.

If your in a hurry and can’t wait for the next batch..there’s one in the marketplace on this site for 120 dollars.

If your really interested in playing space squash and insmouse on hardware. Instead of buying each game, I would invest in a flashboy. It would be cheaper then getting both games..and you could even use the translation patch on space squash.

Well, I’m a bit concerned about homebrew games that might use the save option. I mean box 2 uses one…what about the Zelda game that is being worked on ? Can we take games with saved data and flash them with homebrew games ? Or would we need some kind of flashboy with a save feature…what about the data cable..anyway we can save games onto a computer or a flashdrive ?

Mario Kart is such a….huge project (to go along with all of your other amazing projects). When you first came out with the demo, I was floored. (side note-it actually got me mad at Nintendo, I didn’t even think the vboy could handle a 3-d kart game, I mean if it did, why wouldn’t Nintendo make one…they didn’t even give this system a fighting chance..oki rant done) You’ve added so much in such a small amount of time, I heard you talking about finishing the game engine, do you plan on adding all of the game aspects of Mario Kart.. all of the different things in the menu ? I can’t even fathom how long something like that would take…wow..the vb community is lucky to have you dogp..that’s all I can say.

I’ve tried to learn a bit of coding :), and so that is what I know atm..just a bit. But from what I remember, isn’t a raycasting engine the same type used in wolfenstein 3D ? Do you think your engine would do well in that application ?

This was a very surprising entry, and very well done. You answered one of my questions already when you said you planned to add more to the game. Do you plan to use DanB’s midi player to control the music (off topic wow..how cool is that entry for a developing tool  )?

Have you done any other projects or demo’s for the vboy ? Or was this your first entry into vboy programming ? Are you going to continue concentrating your time on working on this project or do you have others your going to work on also ?

I better stop before I have screens and screens of questions, thanx for the game btw 😀

Pretty interesting. If they are the same ones i’ve gotten from game auctions, they are a perfect fit. I went ahead and ordered some. But what in the world am I going to do with 200 of them ???

-Eric

Sure to get 1 game you need (at a good price) you might end up buying a virtual boy lot on ebay containing 4 or 5 games. Buying that way seems to get you a great deal of extra games and virtual boys.
